This sample short term recorded preparation is in fully editable format (Google Docs and Microsoft Word) so that you can tailor it to your needs and the needs of your class. It will save you countless hours as the content is already pre-populated, so instead of typing everything from scratch, you can simply edit what is there to suit. This document provides suggestions for content that has been carefully researched to help achieve the learning outcomes from the Infant curriculum. These suggestions will be of assistance to teachers who are new to a class level or for those who are not following a particular publisher’s scheme, but can also be easily edited to suit individual circumstances. If you are following a scheme from one of the publishers for a particular subject, you may of course simply delete the suggested content that is provided for that subject and insert the content from the publisher’s scheme instead (or use it to supplement the publisher’s scheme as appropriate to the needs of your class).
Features:
- The maths section is based on the 2023 Primary Mathematics Curriculum.
- The English and Irish sections are based on the most up-to-date September 2019 version of the Primary Language Curriculum.
- All other subjects are based on the 1999 curriculum.
- The documents include the sections recommended in the 2021 Guidance on Preparation for Teaching and Learning for All Primary and Special Schools.
- All of the suggestions for activities are from my own experience of what works well with Infants and these documents are not based on a textbook or scheme. I have suggested resources such as poems, songs, and YouTube videos and have included hyperlinks to these.
- Where possible, learning is integrated across subjects as it can be extremely challenging to cover such a wide range of subjects on the shorter infant day.
- These short terms correspond to TeachingPlans.ie’s highly-rated long term recorded preparation for Junior Infants which is available here.
Important note – 2026/2027 curriculum and preparation guidance update
These editable short-term recorded preparation documents were created in line with the 2021 guidance on Preparation for Teaching and Learning. In May 2026, an updated version of the guidance, Preparation for Learning, Teaching and Assessment, was released. The changes relating to short-term recorded preparation are minimal, and the sections recommended for inclusion remain the same. The only wording change relevant to these documents is that the term “Focus of the Learning” is now referred to as “Focus(es) of the Learning”. As a result, the overall structure and sections included in these plans remain in line with the updated 2026 guidance, with only this minor wording update required.
During the 2026/2027 school year, schools will also begin implementing one curriculum area from the redeveloped Primary Curriculum. This means that some sections of these plans may need to be adjusted during the year, depending on the curriculum area your school chooses to implement and when implementation begins. For example, if your school chooses to implement Wellbeing, the PE and SPHE sections of the plans would need to be adapted to reflect the new Wellbeing specification from the point at which your school begins implementation.
As these plans have not yet been fully updated for the 2026/2027 transition year, they are currently available at a reduced price to reflect this. They remain editable, so teachers can adapt them to suit their own school context, implementation timeline and professional judgement.
