EAL Short Term Recorded Preparation Template and Completed Example

A clear, fully editable weekly short-term recorded preparation template for EAL and language support teachers in Irish primary schools.

The template has been updated with reference to the Guidance on Preparation for Teaching, Learning and Assessment (2026) and the Special Education Teaching Guidelines (2024). It includes the sections specified in the updated guidance, alongside additional sections designed specifically to support EAL planning.

What Is Included?

• One blank, editable weekly template for planning EAL support for a group of children.
• One completed sample weekly plan demonstrating how to use the template and what may be included in each section.
• A PDF document with helpful explanation notes.

The completed example demonstrates how EAL planning can be connected to Up and Away, the Language Proficiency Benchmarks and the Primary Language Curriculum.

An optional integrated Cuntas Míosúil section allows teachers to use a tick or X to record whether each Focus of the Learning has been achieved. This section may be used where the school has agreed that short-term recorded preparation will also serve as the Cuntas Míosúil. Schools may alternatively choose to maintain a separate Cuntas Míosúil document (click here for a template).

Suitable for in-class support and withdrawal settings, the template can be adapted for children across all primary class levels and PSAK proficiency levels, including A1, A2 and B1. It can be tailored to reflect the proficiency levels, strengths, needs and priority learning goals of the children in each EAL group.
