This comprehensive long-term recorded preparation resource has been created to support Irish primary school mainstream class teachers in preparing clear, practical and flexible long-term recorded preparation in line with the Preparation for Learning, Teaching and Assessment Updated Guidance for all Primary and Special Schools (2026).
The resource includes two fully editable blank templates, two completed PDF examples and a 17-page annotated walkthrough with guidance notes, explanations and practical tips. It is designed to help teachers understand what long-term recorded preparation may include, how different levels of detail can be appropriate, and how recorded preparation can remain useful, manageable and responsive to the needs of the children.
The completed examples are based on the 2025 Social and Environmental Education (SEE) Curriculum Specification for Senior Infants. However, the same editable templates can be used for all other curriculum areas, subjects and class levels.
This resource is particularly useful for teachers who want support with organising expected learning, learning experiences, sequencing and pacing, assessment practices, integration and ongoing supports for learning in a clear and professional format. It is also designed to reassure teachers that long-term recorded preparation does not need to be overly detailed or rigid. Instead, it should be a practical, flexible document that can be updated as needs emerge throughout the year.
What’s included:
• 2 fully editable blank long-term recorded preparation templates.
• 2 completed PDF examples showing different approaches and levels of detail and for the Redeveloped Primary School Curriculum.
• A 17-page PDF document with Guidance notes and practical tips on long-term recorded preparation, as well as an annotated walkthrough explaining key sections and features, .
This resource will save you time creating templates from scratch and will give you a clear starting point for developing long-term recorded preparation that suits your own class level, curriculum area, school context and professional judgement.
Important note: This resource includes two editable long-term recorded preparation templates and two completed PDF examples based on one class level and one curriculum specification: Senior Infants Social and Environmental Education (SEE). It does not include completed examples for every subject, curriculum area or class level.
The completed examples are included in non-editable PDF format because their purpose is to demonstrate how the templates can be completed in practice, not to provide editable subject-specific plans for every class level. The particular class level and curriculum specification used in the examples are not the main focus. They have been included simply to show what could be included under each section, how different levels of detail can be appropriate, and how long-term recorded preparation can be organised in a clear and practical way.
The same editable templates can be used for your own class level, curriculum area, subject and school context. Providing completed examples for every curriculum specification and class level would make the resource significantly more expensive. If you would like examples of subject-specific or class-level long-term recorded preparation examples, additional resources are available to purchase separately on the website.
