This Cuntas Míosúil pack has been designed to support primary teachers in completing clear, practical and useful monthly records of learning in line with the updated 2026 Preparation for Learning, Teaching and Assessment Guidance.
The Cuntas Míosúil is a record of the learning that has taken place during the month. As outlined in the updated guidance, the Cuntas Míosúil should record the learning that children have progressed over the month, along with the learning experiences that supported this learning. The guidance also notes that a brief reflection may be included where this is helpful.
Some schools may choose to complete their Cuntas Míosúil as part of their short-term recorded preparation. This is perfectly acceptable where it works well for the teacher and the school. Other schools prefer to use a separate Cuntas Míosúil document at the end of each month. This resource has been created for teachers and schools who wish to complete the Cuntas Míosúil as a separate document.
The templates included in this pack focus on the key information needed for a purposeful monthly record: the new learning progressed, the learning experiences completed, and an optional brief professional reflection.
What’s included?
This pack includes:
✅ 3 editable blank Cuntas Míosúil templates in Microsoft Word format and with links to make a copy in Google Docs
✅ 3 completed Cuntas Míosúil examples (one using each of the templates)
✅ Important information document explaining the templates and how to choose the most suitable one
Why are there three templates?
Three different Cuntas Míosúil templates are included to reflect the different curriculum contexts that may apply in primary schools over the coming years.
As the redeveloped Primary School Curriculum is introduced, schools will not all be implementing the same curriculum specifications at the same time. From the 2026 school year onwards, schools will begin implementing the redeveloped curriculum one curriculum area at a time, according to their own school context and decisions.
This means that during the transition period, teachers may need to adapt their Cuntas Míosúil format depending on which curriculum areas have been introduced in their school.
For this reason, three templates are included:
Template 1: PLC, PMC and 1999 Curriculum
- This template is designed for schools and teachers who are working from the Primary Language Curriculum, the Primary Mathematics Curriculum and the 1999 curriculum subjects for all other areas.
- This may be the most suitable template for teachers or schools who have not yet begun implementing the redeveloped curriculum specifications beyond Language and Mathematics.
Template 2: Redeveloped Curriculum — Infants to Second Class
- This template is designed for teachers from Junior Infants to Second Class who are using the redeveloped Primary School Curriculum specifications.
- For these class levels, the redeveloped curriculum structure includes individual subjects for English, Gaeilge and Mathematics, as well as Science, Technology and Engineering Education. The other curriculum areas are presented at curriculum area level.
- This template reflects that structure and may be adapted as each curriculum area is implemented in your school.
Template 3: Redeveloped Curriculum — Third to Sixth Class
- This template is designed for teachers from Third to Sixth Class who are using the redeveloped Primary School Curriculum specifications.
- For these class levels, the redeveloped curriculum areas are further differentiated into subjects across the curriculum. This template reflects that structure and allows teachers to record monthly learning under the relevant subject headings.
Adapting the templates during the transition period
During the phased introduction of the redeveloped Primary School Curriculum, there will not be one single Cuntas Míosúil format that suits every teacher in every school.
For example, one school may be using the redeveloped specification for Wellbeing, while another may still be recording learning under existing curriculum headings for that area. Teachers should choose the template that best reflects the curriculum areas currently being implemented in their own school and adapt it as needed.
Sections may be removed, renamed or adjusted to reflect your school’s agreed approach and the curriculum specifications in use at the time.
Completed examples included
Completed examples are included to show how the templates may be filled in clearly and practically.
The completed examples are provided in non-editable PDF format. Their purpose is to demonstrate how the templates may be completed and to model an appropriate level of detail. They are not designed to be edited and used by teachers as their own Cuntas Míosúil documents. Teachers should use the editable blank templates provided and complete them according to their own class, curriculum context, school approach and professional judgement.
Please note
This resource is designed to support teachers with recorded preparation and monthly recording. Teachers should always follow their own school’s agreed approach to the Cuntas Míosúil and adapt the templates to suit their class level, curriculum context, school planning and professional judgement.
