What recorded preparation is needed in a special class?

Each child in a special class requires an individual long-term plan for their learning and care needs. The recommended format for this is the 2024 NCSE Integrated SSP+ and Care Needs Plan.

In addition, long-term recorded preparation for each subject is required. Detailed guidance and sample plans are available here. As stated in the Guidance on Preparation for Teaching and Learning for all Primary and Special Schools (2021, pp. 6–7):

“In the special school context the intended learning should be drawn from the age-appropriate primary or post-primary curriculum to ensure children have access to, participate in, and benefit from an education that is inclusive and appropriate to their abilities and needs.”

This means that our long-term recorded preparation for curriculum subjects, available for each class level in our shop, can be adapted for use in special classes. Teachers can select the most relevant learning outcomes to prioritise and tailor the learning experiences to suit the needs of their pupils.

For short-term recorded preparation, all subjects should be included, following the sections outlined in the Guidance on Preparation for Teaching and Learning. We provide an editable template, detailed guidance notes, and a completed sample here to support you in creating these plans here.

Please note that we do not offer pre-filled short-term plans for special classes in the same way we do for mainstream classes. This is because special classes often include pupils at different class levels with diverse learning needs, making it impossible to create sample plans that reflect every possible variation.
